Start Up Biz Q&A

Ah, how I love #startupchat on Twitter! It has become a weekly ritual of mine, taking place every Wednesday at 2:00pm EST. It is such a valuable resource, and a great way to network as well. If you are a new start-up, or even an existing business, I highly recommend joining the chat, as well as following all of the contributors below, very wise people.

Yesterday’s chat was particularly appealing, an open Q&A where you could ask whatever was on your mind. It was interesting to see how many people were interested in some of the same topics. Twitter chats can be a little tricky to follow, so I did my best to group the responses by a particular question.

I'm just starting a new business and wondering if I should get a separate checking account?

@startupprincess
• the answer is YES, you should have a separate way to keep track of your tax deductible expenses so you don't confuse with personal $.
• Financial and tax laws can be tricky and it's worth it to get an accountant to help you. Claim deductions, etc.
• Opening credit cards are good to get rewards, but I don’t typically recommend you get them for a line of credit.

@PhyllisNichols Also make sure you get a tax ID number, and keep track of everything!

@GoodiesForGifts Re: Expenses, I was told it does not matter what u use, as long as you are keeping track! It is vital

What government grants/ sources are the best for woman owned business?

@startupprincess Be very careful with grants. Some have restrictions on what they can be used for and when.

@WinGrants The NSF Small Business Innovation Research Program Grant gives special consideration to WBEs: http://ow.ly/7a8NH

Name 2 other social media networks besides Twitter, FB, & LinkedIn to be on as a female entrepreneur?

@startupprincess We typically only use Twitter, FB and linked in. But I also recommend using video and having a youtube chan.

@GoodiesForGifts Foursquare is a great way to network locally when used correctly. I know video is great for SEO, BTW.

@KCbakes Social Media is essential, but don't take on more than u can handle. Idle/inactive accts make your biz look idle/inactive.

What is the best way to increase SEO without hiring a professional?
@startupprincess
• Look at the keywords people are using to find you, and use those words in blog posts and text.
• Update your content frequently through your blog. Search engines are looking for what's fresh.
• Have keywords in your header. Above the URL bar it says Your company, add other keywords.

@mmonsen7

• Get other sites to link to you. Use relevant keywords. Find them with Googles Adwords Keyword tool.
• Submit to relevant directories. Find blogs in your niche and write posts for them, link to your site in it.
• If you need DIY SEO help, hit me up on Twitter/email. I'll give you pointers.  Check out my website: http://www.whitefireseo.com/

What were the steps that led up to landing that first BIG client?
@startupprincess
• Don't be afraid to start small. Big clients come. Share your successes & attract big clients with results.
• Also note that branding and good websites go a long way. Invest there. Build your email list, and prime clients.
• Good press also helps land big clients. Get your name out there in the media. Magazines, newspapers, TV.

@ParijatDesh Network! Get to know big players in ur field. Show them concrete examples of success & what u can do for them!

@KCbakes research! Know the field you're in and learn who the big players are. Knowledge can earn you great respect.

What's the best way to get that "big article" to spotlight you? To help the chatter going about you & your biz?
@startupprincess
• Networking. Get to know the journalist and figure out how to pitch in a way that is timely and unique.
• Don't be afraid to start small with local papers and smaller blogs. Good press spreads even if reach is small.
• Make your own blog interesting and relevant. Be your own press to start, if you need to.
• Have a fact sheet ready. Press often asks for it, and it's a good exercise to have your 1-sheet in your brain.

@ParijatDesh

• We've had success being guest writers on other sites. Helps drive traffic from ppl who are interested in what we do.
• Social media buzz really helps too. Ask for RTs & shares.

@GoodiesForGifts
• hire pr or write some press releases
• PR firms are great for finding "your story" and promoting it.
• network & learn who contacts are at local papers. Many local papers will pick up if it is a story, not a sales pitch.

@FlackList
• Write about topics people outside your industry are curious to learn about; something that positions you as the expert
• write about topics folks in your industry will rally around

@PhyllisNichols Sign up for HARO alerts (free) way to submit info for articles/interviews. helpareporterout.com

Is a PR agency necessary or can we write our own press releases just as effectively? If so, how do you write a press release?

@startupprincess
• “The Pitch" is key. Pitching is reaching out to a specific journalist with unique story.
• Pitching is preferred. It's more unique and makes the specific contact in the media the focus.
• A press release is generic and is sent to everyone. A pitch should be customized for the specific media outlet
• A pitch also is unique, timely and appropriate to their specific audience. A pitch to one outlet will be different.
• Include brief info and bullet points on your business or product.

@FlackList Depends on your needs. It's not really about press releases but knowing how to pitch and who to pitch.

@ParijatDesh a personal story attached to the pitch really helps.

@GoodiesForGifts Pitch a story to bloggers too. Many are always looking for guest bloggers.

I hope to see you at the next #startupchat!

Tuesday Muse-Day

Yes, yes, today is Wednesday, but yesterday I was sidelined by a very bad migraine. I vowed never to miss a Tuesday Muse-day, so here it is, just one day late.

Winter holidays are upon us, and I'm so excited to start seeing new cake pop designs emerge.  Today's muse, Lil' Cutie Pops, has been unveiling sneak peeks at her White Christmas Collection, and its easy to see why I'm a big fan...

I'm not even sure where to begin.  What perfection, it almost looks like a toy! The level of detail is simply amazing.  His rosy cheeks, arched eyebrows and that little mustache... not to mention the cheery snowman in the background!

Here's another shot from Lil' Cutie Pops' White Christmas Collection... look at that gingerbread house!  This is one of those cake pops that is simply too pretty to eat :-)

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, there is a very important holiday coming up before Christmas, and that is Thanksgiving!  I don't know about you, but it is personally my favorite meal of all time.  Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing... I could eat it every day.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday as well... cooking in the hot kitchen, the windows fogging up, ahhh, I'm getting homesick & hungry just thinking about it!

Wait a minute, where was I... ah yes, Lil' Cutie Pops :-)  Holiday charm is not lost here... it's incredible how two little dots and a curved line can give such delightlful expressions to their people pops!  The wings on the turkey, to the gold buckle on the pilgrim's hat... the beauty is in the details folks.

Make sure you "like" Lil Cutie Pops on Facebook, and check out their website too.  You never know what design will come next - and I promise, whatever it is, you won't want to miss it!  (I'm still swooning over their Halloween entry in our contest last month).

Tuesday Muse-Day

Happy Halloween friends!  Halloween is just around the corner, and friends of mine are STILL asking for costume ideas.  I must admit I'm not that much help in this department... when I was little, my costumes were pretty basic; a witch, a vampire, something to do with a rainbow wig, and one year I was Roger Rabbit, which involved one of those plastic masks that made your face hot every time you breathed.

Speaking of my childhood, Mary Poppins was one of my all-time favorite movies.  To this day, I can still recite most parts of it.  And last year, my Mom and I saw Mary Poppins on Broadway (ah-mayyy-zing!).  Remember the Jolly Holiday scene?

Well needless to say, I was swept up in nostalgia by the Mary Poppins halloween costumes I saw today on Make It Love It and just had to make it today's muse!

Does it get any cuter?

Ashley created the most amazing costumes for her kiddos... Bert, Mary and one of the penguins from the Jolly Holiday scene!  For all you DIY'ers, she even put together a step-by-step photo tutorial to show how she created them!  Her talent absolutely blows my mind... these aren't just costumes, these are hand-crafted pieces of wearable art that her children will be able to cherish for years to come.  The detail and workmanship she put into these outfits... wow... just, wow!

Ashley is quite the wiz with her computer too!  Check out this amazingly adorable video she put together to tie everything together... Bert & Mary are so charming, and her little penguin with that squishy plush belly is pure sunshine.

Since we're talking about costumes, look at this costume I randomly came across. It made me laugh so loud, I had to share...

Are you and/or your kiddos dressing up this year?

Thriving During the Holidays

A couple weeks ago, I told you about a Twitter chat I attended called #startupchat. I found it so informative & inspiring that I set up a weekly email reminder for every Wednesday at 2:00pm EST so that I didn't miss a chat.

This week's topic was How to Thrive During the Holidays.  I launched KC Bakes in April, making this our first holiday season, so I was excited to see what topics would come up.  And yet again, I saw so many great tips, thoughts and ideas!  Here are some of my favorite tweets from the chat...

@TesaRaeCreative Outlining a strategy that can become tradition year over year, something that customers can look forward to.

@BusinessPrtnrs sending out aN E-blast to customers about your offerings for the season incl coupons in adv

@GoodiesForGifts mail chimp is great for sending out email blasts.

@suchimistra Email only as often as you have a great idea that helps your customer.

@CandlesbyTeresa
- Plan an Open House and get to know your local community and find out how you can support them!
- Networking should be a KEY part of your marketing plan in any season. Even if it's local.

@startupprincess
- Network at local business groups. Get to know the key players in your local market and branch from there. Be strategic with gifting.
- Send some free gifts to key players in social media that will give a shout out.
- Consider a daily or weekly campaign for specials. Be creative, plan NOW and campaign.
- Add value RIGHT now to your clients and customers and thank them for their business, keep your name top of their minds.

@Tweetsweettooth we give away things that don't 'cost' anything, copy of free ebook, evaluation of their social media package.

@dotjenna Plan social media content in advance, write Holiday related articles now. Schedule posts with

@TiafenConsult I plan to send New Year greetings to my clients. Most cultures celebrate the new year :)

I contributed some tips as well that got retweeted a few times... @KCbakes
- I ran a Halloween cake pop contest, it attracted 200+ new fans on FB that have remained on as fans afterwards.  I promoted it thru our FB page & Twitter. The contestants were main driving force bc they needed the votes.
- For B2B marketing, you could you do some version of a business card raffle? enter biz info, one lucky winner gets a prize.
To avoid burnout during holidays - be conscious of ur eating! Malnutrition weakens immune system, hard to sustain energy/focus.

Then I had this idea, really on a whim, and it got a huge reaction...
- Include business card magnet in with shipping. People will post it on their fridge... that way your brand is present.

My good Twitter buddy @Mustlovepopcorn from @BDKettlecorn actually ordered magnets that day! :)

I hope to see you at the next chat!

Tuesday Muse-Day

Halloween is rapidly approaching, which brings to mind all things scary and spooky.  Today's muse is scary, but not in the way you might think.

For some reason, making decorated sugar cookies absolutely terrifies me!  I had a really bad experience attempting to make royal icing one time, and I think it scarred me.  But after seeing these quirky Halloween cookies, I may have to give them a second chance.

Check out these vampire fang cookies by Sugarbelle's!  I saw them posted by Baking cakes, and its good that pictures are worth a thousand words, because their post was in Italian :)

There are so many things I love about SugarBelle's cookie tutorial.  She writes like she is speaking right to you, so it reads more like a conversation, which makes it so much easier to follow.  She also gives you tips that she has learned along the way in her baking journey.  I always feel that baker-to-baker tips are much more valuable, because they are speaking from experience.

Also, her photography is awesome!  Each picture is crystal clear, allowing you to get the full impact of her subject.  Look at her adorable kiddos having fun with their vampire cookie pops.

Humorous Fang Cookies (L-R): Fangs with a gold tooth, Lady fangs, Mustache fangs

These vampire cookie pops are so much fun because you can add little details to make each one unique.  Imagine how much fun these would be as props in an impromptu photo booth at Halloween party... then you can eat the prop!

Tuesday Muse-Day

Whenever I'm surfing around the web and I come across really cool ideas, I bookmark them into my "Inspirations" folder under my Favorites.  It's the perfect little collection for me to choose my Tuesday Muse-Days from.  So while I was perusing my folder today, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of them are from one of my favorite blogs, Love from the Oven

Aesthetically, Love from the Oven is very pleasing to the eye. It's clean design makes it easy to scroll through and catch up on the latest posts.  Also, all of Christi's content is situated in nicely organized columns, which makes this occasionally-OCD heart go pitter-patter.  And her photography - wow!  It is so inspired, focused and bursting with color.

I could go on and on, but today's muse is not her blog itself (even though it could be), but rather one of her recent Halloween blog posts which ties in nicely with our push-pop post from yesterday. Check out these beauties... Halloween Brownie Push Pops!

Isn't she a genius?!  Look at all of those fun, bright colors! And see what I mean about the photography?

At first glance, one might think a treat of this calliber is something you could only find in a fancy bakery, but they are actually really easy to make!  However, before I share the link to her tutorial for these treats, just take a moment and marvel at all the layers of sugary goodness... don't scroll too fast, you don't want to miss a sprinkle!

Diet-shmiet, I would not even hesitate to eat that entire thing in 20 seconds take a few lady-like nibbles of this confectionary cylinder of yumminess.

If you want to impress the pants off of your friends and family, here is Christi's awesome tutorial: Halloween Push Pop Peeps!

"Pushing" the Envelope

Here at KC Bakes, our goal is to create high-quality cake pop stands for bakers to use to decorate, display and transport their cake pops.  And while cake pops are our #1 market, we've been creating custom stands for quite a few other items lately!

One of our newest stand projects has been for Cake Push Pops... have you heard of these? They are these nifty plastic cylinders that are filled with layers of cake and frosting - check out these Patriotic Push Pops from Love from the Oven. They make great party favors and are a cool way to mix n' match brightly colored frosting with various flavors of cake.

Given their unique shape, they can be tricky to display on counters or at parties... so check out this custom Skinny Mini Stand that we created for Go Cakes NYC!

This got me thinking... what else can our cake pop stands be used for other than cake pops?  I was so surprised by what I found, I created a new section on our website... Fun with Sticks!  Pie Pops, Pizza Pops & more?  Trust me, you don't want to miss this...

Blogging Gold

Yesterday afternoon I needed a brain break. The day was just kind of dragging on, and I was stuck in haze, not feeling particularly motivated to do much of anything.  I logged into Twitter and scanned my timeline to see if I'd find anything inspiring... and then I spotted this tweet:

*PERK!* I was immediately intrigued.  I'd consider myself an amateur blogger at best, and lately I've been feeling a little lack of direction.  What do I want my blog to do, what purpose does it serve, how can I be more... wait for it... effective?

I'd never "attended" a Twitter chat before, so i wasn't sure what I was in for.  Now having participated, I highly recommend it.  Here's how it works: everyone participates by tagging their tweets with a certain phrase, in this case "#startupchat". Then you enter that term in the Search bar at the top of the page. The results will show all tweets with that phrase in sequential order, so it reads like a chat room.  The cool part is that once that chat is over, if you want to revisit it, all you need to do is search for that term.

@startupprincess was the host/moderator, and would ask certain questions, then the other paricipants would chime in with their thoughts on the matter.  I had a few questions of my own, and since I tagged them with #startupchat, they came up in the discussion as well.  I was absolutley floored at the immediate responses I received; everyone was so friendly and willing to share.  Each tweet was so informative that I found it hard to keep up, as I sat there with my little notepad & pen, scribbling away.

The topics were focused on business and blogging.  I can honestly say I learned a lot!  The great thing is that most of the tips are pretty universal and can be applied to whatever industry you are in.  Here are some of the things I jotted down (some are paraphrased).

@LawLogix Look at current news and magazine headlines and mold them to your industry.

@prforsmallbiz Ask clients what their biggest concerns are, and that becomes your blog content.

@mmonsen7 Best tip: Don't assume you know what people are searching for. Use tools. Research high-traffic phrases.

@dotjenna Write blogs that invite responses.

@prweb Catchy headlines: rhyme, alliteration, oh, and keep it short! Infuse keywords = good for the search engines and readers.

@PhyllisNichols (for blog topics) What are customers dealing with? What are customers working on? What are they looking for?

@RtMixMktg Provide valuable resources to target customers; what will they print & post to the fridge?

@RtMixMktg Follow blogging best practices: post types, skimmable, good ehadings, pics, share buttons.

Some more great tips (unfortunately I didn't write down who said them)
- Write what you know! Everyone is an expert at something.
- Know your audience.
- Be relevant.
- Add value - blog with a purpose.
- What are your audience's "pain points"?

Twitter chats are also a great way to network and meet new people with a common interest.  @startupprincess's next chat is Wednesday, October 12th at 2pm EST, "Being More Creative in Business and Life".  Will I see you there?

xoxo,

Tuesday Muse-Day

It's no secret that yours truly loves owls. Baked goods, home goods, jewelry, stationary... if it has an owl on it, I'm in love.  I wasn't always so owl-obsessed, but after getting my degrees from Temple University, it was a natural progression. (Fun fact: I even have a little owl tattoo on my ankle!).

I follow several bakers, bloggers & foodies on Twitter, and I am LOVING how trendy owls are lately. And with the help of my ginger twin, Gigi of Sweetie Darlings, we keep our eyes peeled for anything owls. So its only fitting that our little feathered friend is the source of inspiration for today's Tuesday Muse-Day!  I could literally post hundreds of photos I have in the Owl Archives, but for your sanity (& mine), here are some of the highlights...

Owl Cake Pops tweeted by @CakeTheater

Owl Cookies tweeted by @SweetSugarBelle

Owl Cake tweeted by @doughmesstic

Check out this light switch that Gigi found this morning - the switch looks like its beak!

And for all you owl lovers out there not in "the know", check out My Owl Barn... you will thank me. Or maybe not; there are so many tempting purchases like this:

C'mon... whoo doesn't need an owly calculator? :)

Extra, Extra!!!

Extra, extra, read all about it... KC Bakes now has an online newspaperThe Cake Pop Daily!

Unlike my poor little blog here who is sometimes neglected (sorry blog, still love u!), the newspaper is updated automatically every 24 hours.  It is Twitter-driven, and pulls from every corner of the web to give you articles, blog posts, recipes, photos and videos about baking & cake pops!

Also, we are hosting a Halloween Cake Pop Contest!  We received 27 entries and they are so precious. I'm so glad its a fan-vote, otherwise I'd have a really tough time picking a winner.  To cast your vote, simply click here.

Ok who remembers LEGO's?  Growing up with a younger brother, we spent many an afternoon making all sorts of creations with these little colorful interlocking plastic bricks.  And remember the little LEGO Men?  They were pretty basic when we were kids; two dots for eyes and a generic smile.

But over the years, LEGO Men have developed into pretty expressive little characters.  And Kate Sullivan, founder of Cake Power, has captured them perfectly, turning every LEGO Lovers dream into reality with Lego Head Cake Pops!!!

As if that's not cool enough, Kate shows you how she did it in a photo tutorialHonestly, I'm glad she posted a how-to otherwise I wouldn't believe these were cake pops... they are so spot-on! :)  Her talent doesn't stop there... Kate is quite the cake genius, and created a large 3D LEGO Man sculpted cake as well.  Yes, that is CAKE!

While we're on the topic of LEGO's, you absolutely have to check out Nathan Sawaya, of The Art of the Brick.  He creates some of the most awe-inspiring LEGO creation's I've ever seen... animals, food, a motorcycle, even an iPhone! Here he is posing with his life-size sculpture of Conan O'Brian, which stands at 77" tall!

Kids & Cake Pops

Today I was babysitting some of my favorite kiddos, Daria and Talia, ages 6 and 3 respectively.  Last year, I made cake pops with them, and ever since, every time I come watch them, the first question is... "Did you bring cake pops???"  So last night I made a pink French vanilla cake that we could make pops with today.

I'm always impressed by how smart these girls are.  After quite a few baking sessions with me, they are so aware of food safety practices.  Today Daria said, "I have to scratch my nose, but don't worry I'll wash my hands after I itch it."  And she did.  I was so proud. High-five Daria!

This about the 4th time I've made pops with them, so now they like to tell me what to do; it's the cutest thing.  "First, we have to crumble the cake!"  Let me tell you... the 'crumbing' step takes mere minutes when you have two enthusiastic kids helping you.

After I mix the frosting into the cake crumbs, the girls came up with a role for each of us.  Daria is the Squisher - she takes a spoonful of the crumb/frosting mix, and squishes it into "blobs".  I'm the Roller, in charge of rolling the blobs into nice, smooth round cake balls.  Talia is the Putter - I hand her the cake balls and she "puts" them into even rows on the cookie sheet.

Today we made cupcake pops... ta da!  They are so excited to take some to their teachers tomorrow.  Oh, and by the way, what do you think of KC Bakes' first stained cake pop stand?

Today wasn't "all work and no play" mind you :-)  After the buzz they got from making cake pops, there was a healthy amount of energy they needed to get out of their systems, so we took a stroll to the local park.  They had a blast playing on the jungle gym, running around and enjoying some time on the swings (which was way more work for me than them, lol).

How was your weeknd?

Healthy Cake Pops

In today's society, there's so much pressure to be thin.  With models like Gisele Bundchen on magazine covers, its kind of hard to avoid.  I mean look at her!   Oh by the way, this picture was taken two months AFTER she gave birth... AFTER! Whatta' witch. Er, I mean great job Gisele :)  Sigh, I wonder what it feels like to not have to "suck it in" for just one day... hmm... anyways, lol!

Being a baker, its tricky to avoid sweets because, hello, we have to taste what we make, right?  The advice I like to follow is a little something my dad always says - "All's good in moderation".

However, there's still the health conscious consumer out there that wants to enjoy cake pops, but not the calories.  Cue Hungry Girl and Health magazine to the rescue!

Hungry Girl's Fudgy Marshmallow Cake Pops - 112 calories each

Health Magazine's Angel Food Cake Pops - 145 calories each

So if you want a healthy alternative to desserts, maybe try one of these recipes next time.  And don't worry about Gisele, that is pure genetics (at least that's what I tell myself, haha).  Have a great weekend!!!

Tuesday Muse-Day

Good morning!  It's slightly overcast here in South Jersey, and they are calling for scattered storms throughout the day, boo.  So for today's muse, I wanted to share something bright, fun & cheery... and I found it!

Check out this absolutely adorable Baby Einstein Caterpillar cake pop arrangement by Lil' Cutie Pops!  Instead of trying to do everything on one pop, they ever-so-creatively made the caterpillar out of 5 cake pops.  I just love its friendly expression, those tiny little caterpillar feet - so cute!

While browsing around, I spotted another crafty baker that made one character out of an arrangement of pops as well, Lollie Cakes.  Rebekah's adaptation of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar is spot on!  And what a creative presentation too - it's long winding body makes it look like the caterpillar is moving through the grass!

Both of these outstanding creations are proof of what you can come up with when you think outside the box pop!  Great job by both of these talented cake poppers!

Tie-Dye Cake Pops

So after all my color quandaries (see previous post), I managed to put some pretty fun color combinations together for my tie-dye cake pops!  These pops are for a coworker's daughter, Hailey.  One of my little cousins who is around the same age is also into peace signs, so I guess all things 'hippie' are becoming popular again.

So without further ado... here they are... ta da!

I was thinking about doint a tutorial, but there was really no specific method I used.  I put two colors of melted candy into a small dish, and dipped the pops in at different angles and twirled them around.  FYI: you will need a LOT of bowls.  I needed 6 to melt the candies, then 6 more for the different color combinations.

Little Miss Hailey just came to pick them up, literally as I was typing this - and by the look on her face, I think they are a hit! :)

Sports-Minded Baker

I'm not sure about you guys, but I have a tendency to associate colors with certain things... mainly, sports.  So it should've came as no shock to me today when I couldn't figure out what color combinations to use for my "tie-dye" marble cake pops.

I planned on using pink, yellow, green, blue and purple, and I wanted to determine what colors I was pairing together before I started melting the chocolates, to try to be efficient.  But then my color-association problem came up.

Yellow and purple?  No... those are the Vikings' colors (or the Lakers, but I'm not a basketball fan).

Green and yellow?  Negative, that's the Pack.

Hmm... I got it! Orange and green?  #!*$... Miami Hurricanes.

After awhile, I just waived the white flag and matched up the colors randomly. I'm probably the only nut who thinks of this stuff anyways, haha.  It's all good, I have no shame in admitting I can be a little crazy about this sort of thing :)

By the way, the cake pops turned out really cool.  I'll post pics later this week!

Tuesday Muse-Day

Hey, hi & hello blog friends :-)  I'm trying to get better at blogging on a more regular basis, but sometimes unexpected things prevent me from getting to the computer, or life just gets in the way.  But rest assured, I will always be here for Tuesday Muse-Day!

Today's inspiration comes from Amanda A., aka Cake Pop Junkie, whose post I spotted in the Cake Pops Resource and Info group on Facebook.

Check out these incredibly beautiful "gender reveal" pops that she created as a unique way for pregnant mothers to reveal the gender of their baby to family and friends:

I just keep staring at them, they are so adorable... the little bees, the dashed line to make it seem like the bees are flying around, I mean come on - that is cute!  And what a cool way to reveal what gender baby you are having!  The expressions on everyone's faces must be so fun to watch as they bite into their pops to see what color cake is inside.

Make sure you check out Amanda's other creations as well.  My dad would flip over these fishing bobber pops and that bag of 'bait' - too funny!

Great work Amanda - I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

I Think I Have Laliophobia

Hi everyone!  I'm sorry I've been M.I.A. this week - I'm still here, I promise!

I had to give a customer service presentation today at my day job for 210 of our student workers, so I was busy all week preparing for that.

I was so nervous!  My heart was racing so fast I could feel my pulse in my throat when I talked.  I'm not sure what gets me so worked up... I wasn't worried about the material I was presenting, I'm comfortable with the students and I really liked the PowerPoint I put together.  But when someone hands me a microphone, ooh boy, that strikes fear in me like no other.  I think its the potential to embarrass myself in front of other people that gives me such anxiety.

When I was in college, I worked for this same department actually, and I attended these all-day Saturday trainings as a student worker.  I remember dreading them, because they always seemed to drag on with speaker after speaker droning on about this and that. Now that I am on the administrative side, it gave me a whole new perspective on the process.  I didn't want these students to think the same of me, so - I came armed with cake pops... I am not below bribes people, haha.

Let - me - tell - you... the bribe worked!  After I tossed the first cake pop into the audience, I had their attention and soon multiple hands were waving in the air, wanting me to call on them.  The best part was, after the whole training was over, one of the male students that caught a cake pop came up to me...

Student: "Um, you made those cake pop things right?
Me: "Yea, I make them as a hobby.  Did you like it?"
Student: "OH MY GOODNESS, that was the awesomest thing ever.  How did you make them?"
Me: "Like step by step how do I make it?"
Student: "Yea, I've been trying to figure out how you got cake into this shape, it's sooo good..."

So I explained how to make cake pops to this 19-year old lifeguard, and he was so intrigued. :-)

ps:  Laliophobia is the "morbid fear of speaking or stuttering". I can certanily identify with that.

Tuesday Muse-Day

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, so today's muse is the color teal.  Teal is the official color of Ovarian Cancer Awareness, and I've come across the neatest way to display it...

On your toes!!!  Carey is the mastermind behind Teal Toes, an organization dedicated to raising awareness in this unique way.  Why Teal Toes?  "Teal, the ovarian cancer color, is striking enough to make people ask about it," she says - and how true!

Here are some cute Teal Toes that I came across.  Click on each caption to learn more about why they chose to paint their toes teal.
